The Department of Private Law is created by resolution of the Board of Governors 19 October 1988 as a result of the disappearance and transformation of the Law Department into three new Departments. It is located in the Faculty of Law (Building B)-campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

It consists of four areas of knowledge (Units) each of which is responsible for organizing, coordinating and developing the teaching and research activities related to matters pertaining to it:

• Civil Law
• Commercial Law
• Procedure Law
• Private International Law
