The Departament of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona pioneered in Spain the introduction of the degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology and holds its first-line position in research and teaching in this field in the country.

For over thirty years, professors of Anthropology at the UAB lead their teaching and research towards the study of ethnography in several parts of the word, the development of the anthropological theory in the tension between cultural specificity and cross-cultural comparison, in the epistemological reflection, methodology and technique on anthropological knowledge and the application of this knowledge to a diversity of social intervention programmes. It is this experience acquired what the Department can offer to its students in a time, within the context of globalization, when the growth of international migration flows and other cross-national dynamics make cultural diversity one of the central topics in the Social Sciences field.
