The European Aerosol Research Lidar Network,EARLINET, performs correlative observations duringCALIPSO overpasses based on a sophisticated measurementstrategy since June 2006. Within a dedicatedactivity supported by the European Space Agency(ESA), sixteen EARLINET stations contributed about1500 measurements during an intensive observationalperiod from May 2008 to October 2009. From thesemeasurements, we establish a long-term aerosol andcloud database of correlative EARLINET-CALIPSOobservations. This database shall provide a basis forhomogenizing long-term space-borne observationsconducted with different lidar instruments operatingat different wavelengths on various platforms over thenext decade(s). The database is also used to study thequality and representativeness of satellite lidar crosssections along an orbit against long-term lidar networkobservations on a continental scale. |
