This work studies NiTi orthodontic archwiresthat have been treated using a new oxidation treatment forobtaining Ni-free surfaces. The titanium oxide on the surfacesignificantly improves corrosion resistance anddecreases nickel ion release, while barely affecting transformationtemperatures. This oxidation treatment avoidsthe allergic reactions or toxicity in the surrounding tissuesproduced by the chemical degradation of the NiTi. In theother hand, the lack of low friction coefficient for the NiTisuperelastic archwires makes difficult the optimal use ofthese materials in Orthodontic applications.
