The work is focused on designing, measuring and testing an active substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity-backed patch antenna self-oscillating mixer (SOM). The cavity-backed antenna structure permits to overcome potential problems such as heat dissipation, unwanted surface wave modes and at the same time may provide better phase noise performance of the SOM.Full-wave FEM-based analysis and harmonic balance (HB) and matrix conversion (CM) simulations are used to design the passive antenna and the active antenna self-oscillating mixer, whose frequency responses have been evaluated for different values of certain geometrical parameters. Compact, single substrate prototypes are presented. These low cost implementations could be useful in radar and communication applications. |
